I have been going to Hay Caramba since they first opened in a tiny strip mall location. Since then, they have upgraded to a new building with a much larger dining room and a beautiful outdoor courtyard.
The food at Hay Caramba is pretty much typical Mexican food from fajitas, to burritos and enchiladas. I had tacos and queso fundido both of which were tasty and what I was expecting. No weird trendy tacos here! The portions are what you would expect (everything comes on a large plate with beans and rice).
The staff is very friendly and helpful and our food came out very quickly.
As for the requisite margaritas, we ordered a pitcher on the rocks. Unfortunatly, the margaritas tasted more like lime juice than tequila forcing my guests and I to order a round of tequila shots to give them a little punch.
Pros : Big dining room accomodates walk-ins and large groups. Friendly and helpful staff. Doors open out onto beautiful courtyard. Hay Caramba would make a great place to have a private event. Kid friendly. Large bar in front would be a great place to stop for a cocktail after getting off the Metra which is located less then a block away.
Cons : Weak margaritas. Somewhat high prices for basic Mexican food.
